Sweet Tea - Country FarmHouse Style

Country FarmHouse Sweet Tea

Ingredients:

3 Family Sized Tea Bags
Pinch of Baking Soda (I use 1/8 teaspoon)
1 cup of Sugar

Directions: Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Remove from heat. Add a pinch of baking soda to the water. Add Tea Bags. Cover. Allow to sit for about 10-15 minutes. Pour into a gallon pitcher and add sugar. Stir. Then fill the remainder of the pitcher with cold water. Stir again. Refrigerate. Serve over ice cubes.

This is the best Sweet Tea ... you are going to love it!

Baking Soda will take the bitterness out of the tea and will also darken the tea. You will not taste it nor does it change the taste of the tea.

A Daily Dose ....

Good Morning. Coffee! Taking the dogs out today, I noticed the flower beds need to be weeded; thought about the WEEDS in life. Things in life that are negatives; that crowd out the good things. Friends who make us feel uncomfortable or obligations that weigh us down. Is it time to WEED your life? Learn to say NO. Spend time with others who are positive examples, bring out the BEST in YOU. WEED Negatives, PLANT Positives!

As I was looking around at all the weeds this morning, I just couldn't help thinking about all the weeds that we carry in our lives. How many times we let the negatives in our lives overpower the positives.

It's not hard to be weighed down by negatives, just turn on a TV or open a newspaper. How many times have you felt overwhelmed by all the negativity in your own life? I know how difficult it can be - work, family, friends ... while many of these things can be a positive, they also sometimes bring negatives into our lives.

A couple of years ago, I made the decision to weed out the negatives. It is exhausting to go through day after day dealing with all the negativity in life. First decision, cancel newspaper subscription. I can read the news that I need online, but when the newspaper was in front of me, I felt the need to read it front to back, each and every section. By reading online, I can keep informed of the issues that are important to me.

Of course, we can't cancel family members ... and it seems that most families have at least one member that has nothing nice to say. This is what I have learned to do, first they can't make you upset unless you let them. In one ear, out the other. Don't take to heart what they are saying about you, others or even life circumstances, it's just their way. Deal with them in a positive way, you might actually see some changes in them the next time that you meet.

As I consciously made the decision a couple of years to change, I found that when someone said something negative, as long as I said to myself "delete" and put a positive in its place, it was easy to go through the day with more positives than negatives. I am human too and it's not always easy to practice what I preach, but the more I practice, the easier it becomes.

Eleanor Roosevelt said "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Make a list of the negatives in your life ... as you are writing down the negatives, look for the positive. Try to practice this continuously, even in your thinking.

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5

Hear a negative, say a positive! Think a negative, "delete", think a positive!

A Daily Dose ....

(I am going to try to start something new. I try to write inspirational messages every morning on Facebook and I would like to carry it into the blog with a little more depth. It can be hard for me to get on the computer first thing in the mornings, usually I use my BlackBerry, as I do a daily Bible Study, need to work out, take care of our special needs teen, etc.)

Good Morning. Coffee! QUIT! Why try anymore? How many times have you wanted to GIVE UP? Did you pray about this decision or are you acting on emotions? Followers of Jesus will say it doesn't make life easier. God puts us through trials; He wants to bring us closer to Him. When you are at the bottom, the only place to look is UP. Up to GOD. Life is Hard. Don't QUIT; PRAY! LISTEN! SEEK Him! Are you looking up today?

God does not want us to give up. He might have a different path for our life than what we want, but He will show you the direction to go if you will just listen to Him. If we are trying to walk through a closed door and it is not the direction God wants for our life, He will make it very difficult to open that door.

God wants us to follow Him along the path that He has chosen for our life. Some of us may have to take a curvy, winding road to get on that path; others may walk a straight road. I believe that some of us need to sometimes make a complete u-turn to find the path that God has chosen for our lives.

Just because we are following in God's direction, it doesn't mean that life will be easy. Sorry! God will give us trials and valleys in our life. Why? He wants to bring us closer to Him. He wants complete faith from us, like driving in the fog on a very dark night. You don't always know what is in front of you; a curve in the road, another vehicle, maybe even a farm animal, but you keep on going to reach your destination. That's what God wants and expects from us.

To receive guidance from God, we need to start with prayer. Make no decision without praying first. Read the Word. God will guide you as you read His book of Law. Be still and Listen. Spend quiet time with God daily. Take a walk, find a comfortable chair, whatever works for you and then open your heart and mind to Him. God will lead and guide you in the direction that He wants for your life.

Stay with God! Take heart. Don't quit. I'll say it again: Stay with God. Psalm 27:14 (The Message).

Look UP to GOD Today! Start your blessed journey with Him.

I have been thinking about adding fabrics and quilts to Prim 'n Purdy. Basically Madison's on Main (our fabric/quilt shop) would combine with Prim 'n Purdy to have only one shoppe with a blend of gifts, quilts and fabrics - The Country Shoppe filled with Handmade Treasures...Crafting Imagination into Possibilities!

I am curious as to what your thoughts are on this subject. Would you be interested in purchasing fabric and quilts along with country and primitive gifts? Would it make your shopping easier by combining the two ideas together?

This would give us an opportunity to offer more classes along with more handmade goodies including prim dolls, country teddies and more. All your shopping needs would be combined into one website which would save you money on shipping too. This is definitely something to think about.

It has been awhile ...

It has been awhile since my last post and I apologize for that. I was trying to blog daily and after another snowstorm, it was very hard for me to keep up. You see, when my husband goes out to snowplow, I get up with him. I then make coffee, make his lunch, fix his breakfast and get him out the door (this usually takes place around 1 or 2 AM). By the time, I get all of this done, I am WIDE AWAKE and unable to go back to sleep. What does this have to do with blogging? It makes for a very long day and unfortunately, even after a zillion cups of coffee, seems to make me move at a slower pace and I never seem to accomplish all that I set out to do that day.

So on to the blog post for today: Remember when I told you I was looking at some new fabrics? I found some (all photos on this post are courtesy of "Connecting Threads") at Connecting Threads. I just love how these fabrics pull together especially in the following quilt samples.

This quilt is the "Pinwheel Parade" Pattern. I just love how it has a beautiful mix of color, but yet still has that "old fashioned" country feel. Just imagine this quilt laid out in a three-season room, a front porch (if you live someplace that weather would permit it) or even a sitting room. It has so many colors to choose your accent colors from.

The next quilt is the "Lexington Liberty" Quilt Pattern. Again, another beautiful display of colors. These colors would look absolutely beautiful in your colonial country house - imagine this one in your living room or even a bedroom. Just enough color without overdoing it. Simply Beautiful!

These patterns are both made with the "Bed and Breakfast" Fabric Collection. So many inspiring fabric color choices, but yet two different looks - wonderful what you can do with the right fabric choices.

Handmade from the Heart

Look around you the next time you are out shopping...how many gifts/product items can you find that are made with quality? How many of these items are handmade?

As 2010 approached, I kept asking myself, what are consumers REALLY looking for in a product? What did I do? I started asking...the same answer came up over and over again - handmade items. Consumers are looking for quality handmade items that will last and last as opposed to "items that can be purchased just anywhere". As consumers are spending their money more wisely while also looking for a bargain, they want a product that is going to last. Most shoppers will spend a few dollars more to have an item that is going to last as opposed to spending their hard earned money on something that is going to break, fall apart or unravel at the seams after being used for a short time.

Prim 'n Purdy is introducing a Brand New Product Line this year: "Handmade from the Heart". This product line will include a variety of items including winter accessories, fashion accessories, home decor items including samplers, raggedy dolls, bears, gingerbread men and even a few doll accessories - ALL HANDMADE. I have been working on a few items already and hope to introduce them to you as early as this week.

In the meantime, we will also be posting our "Winter Sale" and introducing a few NEW scent choices on our website. Our Winter Sale is going to include handmade lotions, candles and lots and lots of our home decor. I would really like to move this stuff out so I can make room for more "Handmade from the Heart" items.

Don’t you just love January! It’s the first month of the year, first day of the month, the first hour of the day; the brink of all that is to come –you get to choose and plan and move into the action you desire …And anything’s possible!

Anything is Possible...Dream * Believe * Achieve! I am looking forward to 2010...stepping out of the "safe zone" and into the "faith zone". With God's help, I am looking forward to moving the mountains this year. I will be using the obstacles that stand in the way by giving them to God and allowing the mountains to become sizable steps with God's help.

I am dedicating this brand new year to God and walking in my faith zone by "Making It Happen in 2010"!

Is it Tax Time Already?

Are you ready? The end of the year is upon us, are you ready to file your taxes?

If you are an organized person by nature, you'll read this in a calm matter wondering if you might have missed something. If you are not, you are already in a panic...am I right?

I thought you might like some help so we are going to offer some tax tips, some will apply to you, some won't. I do not claim to know everything about taxes, so please ask a professional if you are not sure about certain items. Ready? Let's get started...

Let's decide what you kind of information you might need. Here is a list of categories to help you. If you're not sure, make a miscellaneous file and ask your tax preparer.

The most common categories include:

Income - includes all payments received for services or products sold, how much, who paid you and the date payment was received.

Office Supplies - include postage receipts, paper, envelopes, printer ink, pens; just about anything you can get at the office supply store.

Inventory - you should keep a record of anything that you purchased to sell, along with who you purchased product from, the date purchased and the amount paid for product.

Equipment - did you purchase new equipment this past year? This includes computers, printers, a copier, even a new desk chair.

Auto Expenses - include gas, maintenance on your vehicle and mileage.

Utilities - an obvious one but includes your cell phone expense, internet service expenses, business phone or even a home phone if you have a detailed bill and can show exactly how much money was spent toward your business.

Charitable Donations - did you donate your products or services? Did you keep track of these? Also includes monetary contributions.

Travel and Entertainment - includes all travel expenses (hotel, transportation, etc) and also restaurant receipts as long as you really had a meeting or it was actually associated with your business.

Advertising Expenses - include business cards, catalogs, brochures, ads you placed, website designing fees

Do not forget to keep track of your website hosting fees, paypal fees, ebay/etsy fees, post office box fees, bank service charges, etc. These are ALL tax deductible. If you are not sure about something, put it in a miscellaneous file and ask!

You should always try to keep original receipts whenever possible. Also print out your itemized credit card statements and highlight expenses.

Keep your documents organized and stored in a safe place. By following these easy tax tips, you will also keep your sanity without having a panic attack at tax time.

As the New Year Approaches....

I inquired about this on my facebook page, but it really made me think...As the year comes closer to an end, do you make resolutions or do you set goals?

I personally do not make resolutions, but I do set goals (BIG goals) ♥ Sometimes I don't meet them, but I know that I have tried and I also learn what I need to work on in my business and personal life. I make yearly goals, quarterly goals, monthly goals, weekly goals and yes, even daily goals. I do not wait until January 1st to move towards these goals, I have already started on them.

With God's help this coming year, I have stepped out of my comfort zone and I'm moving into my "Faith Zone" ♥ !! What is the "Faith Zone"? Living in the "Faith Zone" means reaching up and grabbing hold of nothing and holding on to it until it becomes something. This is a quote found in the book "Believe that You Can" written by Jentezen Franklin. A highly recommended book, but that would probably be a completely different post.

Lotion Change...

After showing our items at various craft shows and of course, our Open House, we found that it was very difficult to use the 4 oz Luxurious Lotion Bottle Size.

We want to please our customers and it helps when our products can fit in with their life so we did some test marketing.

And as I stated, it was hard to squeeze and difficult to use. Our test marketers LOVE our new bottles. They are the same as our Purse and Trial Size Lotions, but in a 4 oz container.

Changes...

As the coming year approaches, Prim 'n Purdy has decided to make a few changes...these are not major changes, but changes that we feel are for the better.

We would like to have a "BASIC" Scent Line. These scents are favorites and best sellers throughout the year. If you have a favorite scent, please let us know either with a comment here or visit our facebook page with your comments.

Some of our bottles are changing. We have already changed the 16 oz size to a round type bottle with a pump and we have decided to do that with our 8 oz sized products also - there will be no additional charge for the pump on an 8 oz sized luxurious lotion and/or shower gel. Also our 4 oz bottles will be completed different. We have decided that these are sometimes harder for our customers who may have arthritis or may just have trouble squeezing the bottle. These bottles will soon look just like our purse size and trial size luxurious lotion bottles.

A Brand New product available will be our shower gel available in a smaller trial size. It will be a 2 oz trial size with a bottle packaged similarly to our purse size lotions. This size will make a great travel companion, a gift-giving idea or as a way to try before you buy option.

These changes will be made throughout the month of December so follow our blog via google friend feed, as an rss feed or on our facebook page. This is a great way to also receive special deals on remaining stock that will need to be discontinued. Follow along and you will stay notified as changes are made.

Today we added some Primitive Soaps - the pictures do not do the actual soaps justice - they are just too cute (and prim).

The first Prim Soap shown is "Peace on Earth". It is an Oatmeal Base Soap with no color added. These will be available in a variety of scents, but today we used Mistletoe Kisses.

The second Prim Soap shown is "Prim Stocking". It is also an Oatmeal Base Soap with no color added. More scents will be available but this was poured in our Sugar Plum fragrance.

The Halloween Tree

This is a blog re-post. I had to organize my blog posts because we are getting a "new" blog look and came across this post - forgot I even had this one - It is always a favorite...

Start a New Tradition with your Own Halloween Tree

As many colored trees you can find on the market right now, it's the perfect time to start your own tradition with a Halloween Tree. Purchase a pre-lit tree, ours is orange, but I imagine you could use different colors; black, purple, yellow, even green.

After you purchase your own pre-lit tree to use for Halloween, purchase some lightweight decorations to hang on the tree. You can also have your children make ornaments, we have used this technique in previous years.

Skeletons, pumpkins, black cats, witches and even ghosts are great for decorating The Halloween Tree. Our Halloween Tree has a fall type pre-tied ribbon as a tree topper, but again, you could make your own or even do without a tree topper. I think next year, we will add a tree skirt also.

This is an inexpensive, but beautiful way to add some Halloween spice to your Fall Decor. I would love to see your Halloween tree ideas and hear about your traditions. Read below to see how our Halloween Tree Tradition was born.

The Halloween Tree did not start out as a tradition in our family. I have always let my children celebrate Halloween through "trick or treat" and even with school functions. As a family, we would go to the pumpkin patch and other activities, but I just don't like the idea of scaring children - Halloween should be a fun time. We do decorate for Halloween, but I prefer to decorate for "just Fall".

The Halloween Tree became a tradition about 4 or 5 years ago. Our youngest daughter had already joined our family at this time. After being here for about 3 years, she was beginning to like Christmas and all the traditions that come with the celebration of Christmas, this was an achievement in itself. We were out shopping for home remodeling supplies and we found an orange tree with orange lights. Little Boo just had to have this "Christmas/Halloween" tree. We purchased our pre-lit tree, brought it home, made paper decorations for it and a new Halloween tradition was born.

As a Mom, we sometimes forget that we are also a person. How many times have you been in a grocery store WITHOUT your children and turn around every time you hear a voice that says "Mom". It is so easy to forget that we, as moms, are also individuals. And we also forget to recognize ourselves for being a mom, especially a mom in business.

Recently, we received notification that we were being featured as a MOM. Well, actually as a Mom in Business. I truly love to support other moms in business by purchasing products, promoting their items/ideas or by offering them support as one mom in business to another. You can see that this is a wonderful honor to me.

I really want to offer my "Thanks" to Angie for this opportunity. I have known Angie for a long time, but we have never met. We met online through a mutual friend, Jenn. She wanted to feature me awhile back - approximately one year ago - but I honestly didn't feel that I was ready. Let's Go Apple Picking...

I know that I said we were going to visit the gift shop at the Apple Orchard, but since we have had cooler days and even cooler nights, I thought we should pick some apples so we can bake some yummy recipes.

We see the leaves changing color and realize that here in the Midwest, it's time to go Apple Picking; usually after Labor Day. Apples are the easiest fruit to pick as most apple trees are very close to ground. They can be eaten many ways: fresh, canned and baked into yummy recipes to name a few. When you are ready to pick apples, you should decide how will be using the apples.

When you visit the Apple Orchard, take the time to talk to the staff. They will be reliable and friendly. They will also be able to point you in the direction of the kind of apples you are seeking based upon your needs - fresh or for baking. Apples that are ready to eat, will come off the tree easily. The apple should be firm and bruise-free. Always pick apples from the tree; do not pick them off the ground.

After you have picked your apple from the tree, place in a basket gently so that you will not bruise it. Do not wash your apple until you are ready to use it; this will help prevent spoilage. Always store your apples in a cool place such as a basement or the crisper drawer of your refrigerator to maintain the quality of the apple.

There are a variety of apples available for your use but I will not be discussing each and every one of them. Please do your research or ask the reliable staff to help you decide which variety will best suit your needs.

Now that we have our apples, what should we do with them? Obviously, apples are great to eat fresh or we like to cut them up and dip them in caramel. There are also many recipes that will allow you to use your apples for making delicious dishes. They can be used as a dessert, as a side dish or even in the main course...so many uses and so many varieties to choose.

Let's go to the Apple Orchard...

What's the first thing you notice when you pull up at the Apple Orchard? Could it be the Big Barn? All the Apple Trees? Maybe it's the amount of Mums that they have for sale? The first thing we notice is that there were are few places to park...guess it's a busy day!

And look at all the mums that they have for sale. Have you ever seen this many mums in so many colors? I just love the autumn flowers, so brilliant and bright. Mums have a way of saying "Autumn is on the way".

Does your Apple Orchard have any other activities? Petting Zoo? Horse ride? Our Apple Orchard visit includes a petting zoo with farm animals; a baby cow along with a play area for the kids with tractors, a playhouse and a few other activities. We also are able to go on a horse and buggy ride...Large Horses (Draft Horses, maybe) that take you on a path along the outside of the apple orchard trees and main farm.

After our horse and buggy ride, we were walking past the food barn. Oh my goodness, can you smell the food coming from inside the barn. All those yummy smells: hot dogs, bar-b-que sandwiches, nachos, hot apple pie, warm apple cider; they are so hard to resist....come along and join me as we grab a bite to eat! What are you in the mood to have as a snack?

Snack time is over; that was so good. But now it's time to visit the shop....

Happy Fall Y'All ...

Today, in the Midwest, is the First Day of Fall. What does Fall mean to you? Fall can mean so many different things: visits to the Apple Orchard, or even the Pumpkin Patch; it can mean that the days are getting shorter; lighting the fireplace on a cool autumn evening; or to some, it means that winter is just around the corner.

While all of these things can be true, I know that Fall is my favorite time of the year. It takes me back to the times when I was still in school; getting organized, anticipating that first day of school, new school supplies and shopping for the school wardrobe. I know most everyone else tends to do their organizing in the spring, but I still tend to do my "spring" cleaning in the fall. I can't wait to unpack the sweaters and turtlenecks, clean out the closets and reorganize/redecorate things around the house.

I love all the scents of Fall: pumpkins, apples, leaves falling...even the scent of baking and spices. In my house, it seems that more baking is done; probably because the weather turns cooler and since I love having the windows open, the oven helps to heat the house.

And what about all those crockpot meals? Chili, Chicken Pot Pie and let's not forget, SOUPS! I love making soup in the crockpot: Chicken Noodle, Brocoli Cheese and Potato to name a few. I suppose now you would like the recipes...I think we should post these. What do you think?

Or maybe Fall is my favorite season because we can finally bring out all the decorations that we have collected over the years. The Halloween tree (yes, we really do have one), Carved Pumpkins and all the other fall decor.

Fabulous Fall Logo

I designed a new logo for the FALL Season. I love our "regular everyday" logo, but thought the Fall Season should have something just a bit more.

Using our everyday logo, I just changed the wording and outline color, then I added a witch hat and a white pumpkin. I know...not a traditional pumpkin color. I used the white pumpkin for two reasons: 1. It shows up better on the black hutch than an orange one and 2. I really like the white pumpkins that I've seen on display.

I will post a photo of what the actual bag looks like as soon as I remember to pick up the orange tissue paper. Yes, I ran errands and forgot to get the tissue paper. Normally I would order from our supplier, but time is of the essence.

Breast Cancer Packaging Gets a Brand New Look

Breast Cancer Awareness Lotions are getting a BRAND NEW Look at Prim 'n Purdy. I wanted something that would stand out among all the other lotions so we changed the bottle and added a shiny silver cap...I love this look, don't you?

The graphics were purchased at Trina Clark Designs and they featured a pink ribbon girl holding balloons that say "Help find a cure"; just a perfect fit.

Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and a NEW Prim 'n Purdy SALES Special

I admire all of those who took the time to walk in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. My friend since high school, Andrea, just recently completed the Chicago Awareness Walk. Andrea is one of the most giving people that I have recently reconnected with on Facebook. She is an amazing woman. She is an inspiration to many along with being a wonderful friend and a great mom.

We were able to meet up again and the time just passed as if we had only talked yesterday, not since high school and my bridal shower (almost 25 years ago). A Few Changes coming in August...

Prim 'n Purdy Inc is working on a few kit specials for new consultants. Be on the lookout, these will be announced via Twitter, Facebook and here on our blog. This will be a wonderful opportunity for those of you who have been "sitting on the fence" about becoming a consultant.

We will be announcing new products, new scents and new specials all during the month of August. These will include our new fall items that will be available soon along with a few changes in some of our products. We will also let you know when our new Fabulous Fall Catalog is available.

In the coming week, we will choose the name for our new fragrance and announce the winner on our blog. We have so many names that choosing a winner will be hard...thank you to everyone who participated!

Summer Holiday

While browsing online, I came across this wonderful photo and it starting the thinking process; so many people are staying home this year or doing activities near their home that maybe Prim 'n Purdy should offer a "Summer Holiday" Collection. I should add that this are not new scents (unless specified); they are just a way to use the existing items for your own Summer Holiday Home Decorating.

I decided to pour some ocean scented candles...with that came more ideas and more ideas...you get the general idea. I personally would love to live by the water; Beach Inspired was born. I decided to make home decor ideas to go with the products that we have at Prim 'n Purdy.

Decisions...Decisions...Decisions...

As I am sitting in the living room last night, relaxing with my family, I am thinking about so many things - what should I include in the kit? what should the kit cost? how many different scents should be offered? variety of sizes? jars? And the list goes on and on....

Looking over my notes this morning, I have decided to just take it One Day ... One Item ... One Scent ... One Size ... at a time. Start with what we have, see what works and then add to the product line as we go. I keep a daily journal with dates, things to do, things that I want to see, business goals, etc. and I will continue to use this as I take this journey through faith.

I may have to make many changes in the future and then again, maybe not! We'll have to see what scents sell, what new ones the customers would like to see, etc - this goes along with the actual product line including candle sizes, new product additions, etc.

Today and this weekend, I am finishing up a smaller version of the catalog. This will be an easier version to mail, will also be included in hostess packets and available for "book order" parties. I finished up our informational brochure during the week, it looks FABULOUS, and it will be readily available to consultants and can also be used as a handout.

New Beginnings / Fresh Start

I wasn't sure what to write about today and after 3 cups of coffee and a walk outside, I decided that if I was going to start blogging daily maybe we should just "Start Fresh with a New Beginning".

This photo was actually taken with my BlackBerry one morning. What started out as a cloudy day, actually became sunny. Here the sun is trying to break through the clouds - New Beginnings / Fresh Start.

Prim 'n Purdy was started because a stay at home mom had a dream - a dream to provide an income for her family but also allow her to be at home with her children.That dream began with the desire to create a better smelling, better burning candle. After months of research and then more months spent testing the product, Prim 'n Purdy was born.

Little Known Fact: Prim 'n Purdy did not start out as Prim 'n Purdy. It actually started out with the name of Heartwarming Creations and then I realized that the name was already taken (along with the website).

Prim 'n Purdy, founded in 1997, began with only ONE product - a Votive Candle. That dream ignited into a desire to create bath and body products that every mom would want to use to pamper themselves. Prim 'n Purdy has continued to grow that dream with guidance from God and a walk in faith.

Little Known Fact: This is a true fact - Prim 'n Purdy did not start out with the same goals and desires that we now have. After many years of praying, the walk along the right path (God's direction) became our "ultimate goal". This is being achieved by a commitment to do God's will, a walk in faith (which can sometimes be like driving in fog) and lots of praying (by myself and others) and support.

As I walk along the faith path, I know that there will be bumps and even a few mountains, mistakes will probably be made (I ask for your forgiveness now); there will be trials and tribulations along the way, but I know that in the end, I will have reach the finish line that God has impressed upon my heart.

Missing Me...

I have been missing for quite a while judging by the date of my last post. I have made a goal/commitment to post daily (Monday - Friday) so hopefully you'll be seeing a lot more posts from me in the near future. Most times I do not post on the weekends, mainly because I reserve those times for a day off and family days.

I actually made this commitment to start on June 1st. After all, it was a Monday, beginning of a new month, BUT things happen and so I had to change my start date. June 3rd seemed like the next date to start this project. Why? It's a month before my birthday and the number 3 has always been my favorite number - smiles!

I was trying to come up with a system of sorts. You know on Monday - post a recipe, Tuesday - post a business tip; but I couldn't seem to find a system that I liked so we're just going to see how things go.

What will you be seeing from me? Definitely business tips - direct sales, tax tips, party ideas, etc, Recipes - Quick and Easy, Crockpot, Desserts, etc, New Products, New Scents, New Ideas, Specials of the Month, Decorating and Organizational Tips, etc - a Variety of Ideas and Tips.

WOW! I was stunned to find this award in blog comments this afternoon.

I would like to thank Liz of “Craft from my Heart Blog” for honoring me with the Attitude of Gratitude Award. I feel like dancing! It is a wonderful honor to accept this award. I am supposed to nominate 10 blogs that show an "Attitude of Gratitude". I had a very hard time narrowing this down to just 10 blogs, so I chose people that I follow on twitter, that also blog (some may be newbies and others are seasoned bloggers). I think you will enjoy following and reading about them as much as I do.

1. Unique Women in Business. Erin is a fantastic supporter of women in business and not only does she blog, but she also sells her items on etsy and runs a yahoo group for women in business.

2. Ladies Blend. Pennie has become one of my good friends (that I've never met). We became friends via twitter and then facebook. She has some of the prettiest earrings.

3. Cute 2 Carry. I follow Tracy on Twitter (and she may not even know it yet!). She makes the cutest bags - I love them.

4. Work Chic. They have the best outfits when it comes to "work" clothes. They show you how to pull it all together and what works (and what doesn't!).

5. Macaroni and Glue. Kelly is a wonderful inspiration and her cards are beautiful. I actually met Kelly through the UWIB group (mentioned above) and I have ordered from her more than once. And her twitter updates (about her daughter) are the cutest.

6. Purses, Bags and Sew Much More. I started following Susan on Twitter (she has no clue!). Some of her products are in my faves (on etsy). I love the fabric she chooses for her bags - so chic.

7. Thrifty Decor Chic. Sarah is another blog that you have to read. She has such wonderful ideas about taking a piece and then "pulling it all together".

8. BB Bellezza. Kimberlie has some of the most unique items that I have ever seen. I love the items that she makes with keys. (Yes, I have a passion for keys lately).

9. My Brown Bag Studio. Actually, I just love the name of this blog (and that's where it all starts).

10. The Pickled Pepper Patch. She has the BEST patterns and great tutorials. You do NOT want to miss this blog.

New Website...Coming Soon!

We are in the process of changing our webhosting to DIYestores. I really wanted the flexibility of being able to add products from my desktop or laptop; no matter where I am working. I also needed to be able to limit quantities of certain items especially our "One of a Kind" Raggedies and Bears.

There are a few other things that I really liked about DIYestores. I like the fact that I can add a wish list, gift registry, unlimited products and pages, events calendar, blog generator and so many more features...WOW!

I am inputting the products as fast as possible and hope to have a smooth transition by the end of the month. I'll keep you posted.

I will say that Shelly @ DIYestores has been very helpful. She has pointed me in the right direction so many times that I really owe her a big "THANK YOU". If you are looking at starting a website or maybe just want to make some changes, check out DIYestores - you won't be disappointed.

On another note, today is Good Friday. Please remember what Jesus did for you - He died for our sins so that we can be assured of an eternity in Heaven. Believing in Jesus is the only way to be saved. You can not be saved by any other way, there are no other roads to God; no other salvation plan is available! This is what Good Friday means to me and this is why I celebrate it - reflection and thankfulness. I choose to put my faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

Prim 'n Purdy has a NEW Logo

After doing some researching and reading, I have come to the conclusion that your label should be a reflection of your business. It should be easily recognized and associated with your company. Case in point: How many times have you gone to the store looking for that one item and it seemed to be "out of stock"? But in fact, the company had changed the label (without warning) and it was actually it the same place it always had been. I had a hard time picking just one graphic that would be "THE ONE". I admit it, I am a graphicaholic - see I even have a graphic for that :0)

This graphic was made by Carmen at Shweet Potato Designs.

I am being quite serious, I have tons and tons of different graphics. I use them in my designs, scrapbooking, making cards for friends and family, etc. After careful consideration, I was able to narrow it down. I wanted something that said Prim 'n Purdy is more than just "bath/body products" and "candles". What is the absolute thing that our business is about - A Prim Hutch filled with Handmade Treasures! All of our items will have the same graphic including our bags, cards, etc. I am very excited to reveal to you, our New Look:

I have been on Facebook for only a short time, but I have really enjoyed connecting with friends that I haven't seen in 20+ years along with friends that I have known for a short while. It's a wonderful experience getting to "talk" with them, see what they are up to, look at the pictures and just spending time with them.

While searching Facebook, I found business pages. You can add your business on facebook and then have your friends, customers and others, sign up to be a fan. I decided that this would be a fun way to promote my business, show off new products and post updates.

The name of this scent just sounds like something you would have to own. This is personally one of my favorite scents. I usually do not like flower type scents, but this one seems to have a softness added to it.

Yesterday, after receiving an order from a fellow UWIB Member, we had a discussion about how more and more of us are choosing to give gift items with meaning. For instance, my Breast Cancer Awareness Soap Bars have been selling out almost every day in the last two weeks. I have been wanting to add some other Awareness Soap Bars, with more scent choices, but just haven't had the time.

After conversing back and forth online with a few other members, I decided to expand my BCA (Breast Cancer Awareness) Line to include my lotions, shower gels and a few other products. Even after the holidays, when the weather is cold and the snow is blowing, a scarf can come in handy. It is a perfect gift for a man, woman or a child. I am not a hat person, so I will sometimes wrap myself in a scarf. This handmade, original scarf was made with two full skeins of very soft yarn. I wanted something different so I decided that instead of "traditional" scarf fringe, I would add some spice - a crocheted fringe. This handmade scarf is a heavy duty scarf and it is machine washable.

I am working on this scarf design in a variety of color options. Look for it on my website and my etsy shop very soon.

We are changing our candle making process...Our SoyLites™ candles are made with natural and renewable soy, a small percentage (about 2%) of other vegetable waxes, fine fragrance oils and essential oils. These candles will burn longer and cleaner than traditional paraffin waxes. We use high quality premium fragrance oil in our SoyLites™ Candle Line, as well as 100% essential oils in our Serenity Sensations aromatherapy candles. We prefer to leave the candles naturally colored, but due to customer request, we use quality candle dye in some of the SoyLites™ Candle Line to match your Home Decor.

Of course, this also means lots and lots of testing AGAIN! Candlemaking is a complex process - what size wick? how much fragrance? and so on. The process to make the necessary changes was not as time consuming since we already knew what size wicks and fragrance usage in traditional paraffin wax.

I updated my "about me" page also, but didn't have a chance yet to update my eBay storefront page (maybe this weekend - smiles!).

You may also make purchases directly from the website, but eBay listings tend to open up a world of possibilities. Scents that were listed on eBay are Very Vanilla, BlueBerry Muffins, Pumpkin Pie Spice and Creme Brulee - don't these sound so yummy??!!

Get Your Mail Clutter Under Control

Do you feel like mail has taken over your desk or countertop? We'll show you how to organize your mail and get some control back into your life.

1. Go Green by signing up for paperless statements from your bank, credit cards, etc. This is a great way to control the mail clutter and you'll also be saving a tree. Less paper and envelopes, less clutter.

2. Reduce the junk mail. You can remove your name from unwanted magazines, catalogs, advertisements and many other unwanted items that make it into your mailbox. Click here to get started with your name removal process.

3. Sort your mail while at the mailbox, before it even comes into your house. Take all the unwanted mail (not including credit card offers or other items that may contain personal information) immediately to your recycling bin.

4. Shred all unwanted mail that may contain personal information. This will get rid of the mail while protecting your identity.

5. Mail Message Center. Set up a system that works for you. You can use file folders, an actual message center, 3 ring binder with folder system, etc - just use whatever works best for you and your family. It is usually better to stay away from office bins or trays because they "invite" piles of clutter. If many family members get mail, it would be best to use separate file folders for each member.

6. Time to Sort. We use the IBACT (Important Papers, Bills, Action Items, Catalogs and Magazines, Toss) System.

Important Papers. All important papers include insurance policies, bank statements, tax documents, etc. File these items right away in the appropriate place.
Bills. File these in your bill filing system. If you don't have a bill filing system, we will touch on this at a later time.
Action Items. These are items that require action such as school conferences, report cards that need signing and other school items. They may also include items that are work related, insurance updates, etc. These should be taken care of as soon as possible.
Catalog and Magazines. Sort through your collection of catalogs and magazines. Only keep those catalogs that you will be ordering from within the next six weeks, or you can order items online and eliminate catalogs. Magazines should be placed in your magazine bin or basket. Only keep current magazines; for example when you receive the March issue, toss the February issue and so on.
Toss. Use this to toss all the unwanted mail that you may have missed during your first sort.

By using the steps above, you should be able to keep your mail clutter under control. Remember old habits are hard to break and you are going to need some time to make this system work for you and your family. Coming next week, we will show you what we use for our bill filing system.

A Halloween Tree

Start a New Tradition with your Own Halloween Tree.

As many colored trees you can find on the market right now, it's the perfect time to start your own tradition with a Halloween Tree. Purchase a pre-lit tree, ours is orange, but I imagine you could use different colors; black, purple, yellow, even green.

After you purchase your own pre-lit tree to use for Halloween, purchase some lightweight decorations to hang on the tree. You can also have your children make ornaments, we have used this technique in previous years.

Skeletons, pumpkins, black cats, witches and even ghosts are great for decorating The Halloween Tree. Our Halloween Tree has a fall type pre-tied ribbon as a tree topper, but again, you could make your own or even do without a tree topper. I think next year, we will add a tree skirt also.

This is an inexpensive, but beautiful way to add some Halloween spice to your Fall Decor. I would love to see your Halloween tree ideas and hear about your traditions. Read below to see how our Halloween Tree Tradition was born.

The Halloween Tree did not start out as a tradition in our family. I have always let my children celebrate Halloween through "trick or treat" and even with school functions. As a family, we would go to the pumpkin patch and other activities, but I just don't like the idea of scaring children - Halloween should be a fun time. We do decorate for Halloween, but I prefer to decorate for "just Fall".

The Halloween Tree became a tradition about 4 or 5 years ago. Our youngest daughter had already joined our family at this time. After being here for about 3 years, she was beginning to like Christmas and all the traditions that come with the celebration of Christmas, this was an achievement in itself. We were out shopping for home remodeling supplies and we found an orange tree with orange lights. Little Boo just had to have this "Christmas/Halloween" tree. We purchased our pre-lit tree, brought it home, made paper decorations for it and a new Halloween tradition was born.

Fall Cleaning and De-Cluttering

With the fall season upon us, now is the time to do some seasonal cleaning. For me, fall is the time of year when I like to clean out the closets, organize the little areas that I may have overlooked over the summer season. I like to think of fall as a "Back to ... Organizing, Cleaning, Sorting, De-Cluttering" - you fill in the blank.

Below you will find some ideas to help get you started. These ideas are for the beginning organizer or even the seasoned organizer.

1. Now is the perfect time to clean out your closets. Out of the closet should come all those summer/spring clothes that you did NOT wear. Also, sort through your fall/winter selection - KDRT: Keep, Donate, Recycle (into rags or if you are crafty, make something new), or Toss.

2. Winterize Your Wardrobe. Take inventory of your winter coats. What needs to be repaired (zippers, hems, etc), cleaned, etc? Do the coats, snowpants, etc even fit? Again use the KDRT method. This is a great way to donate those winter coats to a local "winter coat drive". Also, hats, mittens, gloves, scarves: do you have a pair? Are they in good shape? Do they need to be replaced?

3. Clean your windows. Fall is a beautiful time of the year, especially if you live in an area where the leaves are changing colors. Don't you want to see the beautiful colors through nice clean shiny windows? Are you going to be hanging fall decorations or decorating for the holiday season, this is a great way to allow others to really see your decorations too.

4. Old Toys. This is a great way to go through all the toys that your children no longer play with or they have outgrown. Donate toys that are in good condition to an organization that accepts "gently used" toys - maybe a local daycare or church. Missing pieces or parts? Perfect time to toss it. Another reason why is because the Holiday buying season will be here before you know it and it's nice to have ideas on what they will want and what toys/games that they do play. If your child is younger, you may want to allow him or her to choose another toy for their generosity.

5. Outside Cleaning. This includes storing away the bikes, lawn mower, gardening tools or other items that will no longer be needed once the snow starts falling down. Put away the kids swimming pool and other outdoor toys. Hose down your garbage cans and recycling bin too. Store the patio furniture. Make a day out of this with hubby and the kids with the promise of a fall walk in the woods or a matinee movie.

6. Organize and Take Stock of your Food Pantry. How many bottles of ketchup or mustard do you really need? Do you need to refresh your supply of tomato sauce - soup season is upon us. Make a list of items that you need for holiday baking or cooking and when the item or items go on sale, you will be ready to make your purchases.

7. Start a List. You will want a list of items to purchase for the holiday season including gift giving. Having a list that is handy, you can shop for items that you find on sale. This will also eliminate impulsive (expensive) buying.

8. Start Decorating. Do you love Halloween? Maybe you host the Thanksgiving dinner? Start decorating your house. You do not have to have elaborate (again expensive) decorations. A few candles with fall accents, hang pumpkins that your children have colored or decorated in the windows, add a few fall colored inexpensive items like placemats or coasters will all add to the ambience of Fall or Halloween.

Let's talk about Fall decorating on a limited budget. Today we will decorate the dining room/kitchen table.

This fall decor arrangement can be used with things you already have around your house. We have used 4 fall colored placemats, along with 2 votive type candle holders and candles, doily and a floral arrangement.

This is a great way to say "Welcome to Fall" with your family members or friends that arrive for company.

Everyone knows that Breast Cancer Awareness Month will be here soon - October. Today I added Breast Cancer Soaps to the Awareness Page along with Hearts A'Fire Candles (dedicated to Go Red for Women). These Soaps are available in a Cherry Mist Scent - yummy!

Yes, there is more. I also added Bayou Breeze Soaps to the Spa Shoppe. The Spa Shoppe is another collection that I am working on and will try to keep updating products as soon as possible. Bayou Breeze is a brisk, ocean scent - clean and refreshing. Even the men love this one!

I will continue to add and update products as soon as I can. Trying to get the Fall Collection ready to be photographed. Stay tuned...

Website Updates and Votives Candles

I've been working on re-doing the website now for a couple of days (actually weeks, if you include moving some of the pages and uploading some of the new products). I am finally adding the candle pages - slowly, but surely.

Today, I worked on the votives page. Prim 'n Purdy votives are available in two sizes (the photo on the left - 5 oz votives) - 2.5 oz and 5 oz. The votives are offered in a wonderful variety of scents - something for everyone. These are not your "supermarket" candles, these are handcrafted with a longer burning and scent time.

I will be adding the jar candles page soon (might even get it up today yet). I have more jar candles to put on the site, but at least this will be a start. So far, I have only the home page of the jar candles up on the website. Again, these aren't your "supermarket" candles, these are also handcrafted with a longer burning time, a cleaner burning time (you won't see wax on the sides of the jars) and a longer scent time also.

Need to take some photos of my soylites - mason jar soy candles - they are wonderful. These burn so clean and the smell is "out of this world". That will be my goal for the weekend.

I am working on making some changes to the Prim 'n Purdy website. Please visit the site and let me know what you think about the home page so far. The pages will eventually have a primitive/country farmhouse look to them. I am trying to make the website and the blog more consistent with the product line.

I am also working on a catalog of products. Most of our items are available in limited quantities because they are OOAK and/or exclusive ONLY to Prim 'n Purdy.

I know that some of the links on the website are not working yet, do not despair, I have been out all week with this concussion and will be working on them over the weekend and again, next week. I have lots of pictures to take and photos to publish on the site. Whew...I will be busy!

New Organic Reusable Bag

I am working on a new crochet pattern, made some adjustments, so it will work with my own ideas. I am also going to add a removable liner so you can be washed, if necessary. This wonderful tote bag is being made with 100% organic products - yarn and hemp fabric! Exciting! You will be able to use this bag for grocery shopping, toting around town, picking up just a few things, attending activities with the family...so many ideas for this one bag. I will post a photo as soon as I have it completed...I have one side of it almost done. It is a wonderful mix of colonial colors in English Lavender from Bernat.

Starting a New Business

Starting a New Business can be very time consuming. It takes a lot of hard work to get everything going and get the business "off the ground". This business isn't really new to me, but it is something that I love and am very passionate about!!! I love to help other women save money by offering a complete ONE STOP SHOPPING EXPERIENCE. We will eventually offer boutique designer clothing, handmade, boutique and vintage jewelry, personal body care products, home decor and accessories, Paw Pleasin' Items for your pampered pet, DivaLicious - everything for the DIVA in YOU and don't forget our Gift Boutique Too!

I thought that since I really don't have any new products, I would just share little steps about me and the business. We will also eventually offer a networking "woman to woman" experience. It will be available to ALL woman - corporate, business, home-based woman and moms too.

To those of you who have emailed and/or called me asking when we will be open for business. I just want to let you know that I am working on the website. I will continue to add products as they arrive. We are receiving merchandise daily.

In the meantime, I am going to open up an eBay store shortly so I can list some of the inventory clearance that we have available right now. I will share the link here as soon as I am ready to open on eBay.
